My ESL students and I need graphic novels that are age-appropriate to help them learn English! They are tired of reading picture books when all they need is age-appropriate text that is easier to read than chapter books. My students are incredibly gifted and driven but don't have access to the resources that they need. I serve primarily Central and South American and Vietnamese ELL students and many of them are refugees (political and economic) from these countries. Graphic novels are a real boost for English language learners and are much more gratifying for them to read than picture books. It has been proven that independently reading a text that interests you is the best way to learn a language AND to improve critical thinking, reading comprehension, and creative writing skills. I am trying to purchase a library of graphic novels that will inspire and motive my ELL students to read!
