After spending my own money to purchase just 7 Lego pieces for each of my students to work with to try out an activity that promoted teamwork and communication skills, I was sold and knew that we needed more! After such success with this activity, ideas came flooding in and I can't wait to do so much more in the future! I create the lesson plans/activities not only for my classes, but for a few other teachers as well, so the impact will stretch to hundreds of students in our school each year. By using something as simple as Lego pieces, students can learn so many valuable lessons that help them to become better learners, leaders, team members, and overall better people because of the value of what they see that they can do - together! Students were so isolated over the last year and a half and we had concerns about how they would interact together again, but after seeing their response to this activity, hope was restored! Students got to use their creativity to build with a familiar learning toy, then work with another student to improve their process; then were challenged to take turns teaching/learning from each other in creating a "simple" object while communicating with their backs to each other. They were so creative, engaged, and took away so many valuable lessons that I can't wait to implement some more strategies in the future. These activities will also be developed into teaching more of the engineering design process, automation and definitely more teamwork and communication activities will be incorporated to reinforce 21st century skills as well as employability skills. Look out world, my students are being prepared to be amazing leaders and with these materials provided, they will make our world a better place!
