I teach in the city of Huntington Park, CA where most of my students are of Hispanic and Latino descent. I teach (2) 7th grade World History classes and (2) 8th grade US History classes. My students are eager learners that demonstrate a willingness to strive for academic achievement. My classroom has many resources (individual laptop computers, overhead projector, speakers, printer, whiteboards, desks, chairs). However, I do not have many books for the students to read. Literacy is always a focal point. Many are reading below their respective grade levels. I want to try and provide as many reading materials as possible for my students. We are designating a 50 minute period everyday this year solely for reading, to help the students improve their comprehension and to increase their reading stamina. I am more than confident that their reading levels would increase if they had books available to them.
