As we head into our historical fiction unit we, as 5th grade teachers, want to give our students an unforgettable experience. Our hope is that every single 5th grader will have their very own copy of the book "Blue" by Joyce Hostetter that they will get to keep for themselves. We will be using "Blue" as a grade-wide novel study while intertwining some non-fiction text to accompany their understanding of what life was like during World War II, specifically how war and polio affected many families. The BEST part about this book is that the setting is in Hickory, NC (a mere 80 miles from the students hometown). The students will get to develop a whole new appreciation for historical fiction and its relevance to them. After we read this novel our goal is for Joyce Hostetter, the author, to come out and visit with our 5th graders to talk about the book and her as an author. The students will get their books signed and have an experience that will leave them inspired as leaners, readers, and writers.
