The absolute surest way I've discovered to ensure that kids are great readers is to ensure that they love reading. For many students, the pathway into reading includes graphic novels, jokes and magazines. Sadly, my classroom library is currently devoid of these items. I imagine a classroom where every one of my students is enthralled in their book or magazine. I imagine silent, independent, reading time followed by spirited discussions of the books and magazines my students are reading. I imagine a book culture where students are passing around books the way they currently pass around Pokemon cards. Stephen King said about books that they are "portable magic." I want each of my students, even my most reluctant readers, to experience this magic.
