As a 'Title 1 School', most of our students live well below the poverty level. Their parents work for survival. In order for them to break the cycle of poverty, they must learn to navigate the post-secondary world and the world of work. The second semester of their senior year, all students must take and pass Capstone Portfolio, or 'Adulting 101'. Here, they learn how to find a job, interview for the job and keep the job. They learn how to advocate for themselves, identify areas of need as far as their soft skills and improve their ability to speak in public and above all, NETWORK! There is one aspect of 'adulting', however, that can be taught but because of ones socio-economic status, cannot be practiced or perfected. Our students have never owned professional clothes. Most have never touched brand-new shoes. Professional dress for a young adult can change everything. This is the basis of the Clothing Closet. I have gathered gently-used clothes for our seniors and it has made a huge impact. Many students when they have to dress professionally borrow ill-fitting clothes and shoes. They could be the most brilliant person in the room, but they will be judged on their appearance first and foremost. With the funds I receive, I will be able to add to my donated clothes to make sure that every one of our seniors have an interview-ready outfit to wear when they graduate.
