Young students, especially those from low socioeconomic families, desire structure (whether they would admit it or not). I strive to provide a classroom environment that is equally structured as it is warm, inviting, engaging, and bright. By purchasing my students a rainbow rug, we as project collaborators would be gifting them with a space that they can call their own. The bright colors will bring joy and life to the room, and the defined boundaries of each square will bring pride and structure to our class atmosphere. Whatever happens in THEIR square is it up to them. My students are plagued with uncertainty- When is our next meal? Who am I staying with tonight? Where is mom? When is dad coming back? In a world where they have virtually no control, I truly believe that by giving them a space that is their own, students will take on a new role of ownership and feel secure knowing that they are in control of that area. Not to mention- the rainbow rug works wonders with classroom management. It sets boundaries for student movement. They can wiggle and move, but it gives them structure to know what is safe and appropriate movement during instruction and class activities. Despite what people may think, I consider the rainbow rug one of the most crucial ingredients to effective whole group instruction. It is an all-around, great investment.
