Last year, I implemented flexible seating to help my students focus throughout the day on the tasks at hand. At the beginning of the year, the students try out each seating option. They then rate their choices so that I can place them at their optimal seat. All students have a Home Base in my classroom because everyone needs a place to call ¨home¨. The students choose from standing desks, low desks, tables, and ball chairs. I would like to add stools to my Home Base options but of course, limited funding has made that a hard task for me to accomplish thus far. When students are working in groups, partners, or individually, I also like to offer seating that provides comfort to them. I have carpet squares, wobble cushions, ball chairs, a bench, and a rocking chair. These options help them choose a different style of seating from Home Base to help them stay focused for longer periods of time. The folding floor chairs will give the students another choice for comfort while working on the floor. The past two years have been a learning experience for myself and I have observed my students feel more like they are at home and build ¨family¨ within our classroom.
