A comfortable rug and chart paper are both necessary supplies to help create a literacy environment that is engaging for students. First graders love to get comfortable when they are reading, so a rug would be a perfect place for them to do this. There are many times throughout the day where we will have independent or partner reading. These rug spaces create a special area in the room where students can focus on their reading while being comfortable. The chart paper will help us brainstorm our story ideas and record them so that everyone can see. Both of these tools will be a tremendous support for students during reading and writing workshop.
