I have seen some of my students go from avoiding reading at all costs to begging me to work on their book reports and projects since I started reading them the Series of Unfortunate Events book series by Lemony Snicket. I chose this book series to read because there are just enough chapters that if we read one chapter a day, we will finish right at the end of the school year. Since I started reading Chapter One of the first day of school, I have watched my students' love for reading explode. Unfortunately, we only have one class set of the books, which are constantly being switched from student to student. I center some of my literacy stations around this series, and it is very hard for the students to find text evidence when there is only one book for a class of 22. I often have to project pages onto the board so all the students can see. If we had four more sets of books, so many more students would have the opportunity to be able to read the books on their own. We have a waiting list in my classroom right now for students who want to read the books during their independent reading time, and my students have checked out every copy our school library has (which is only a couple). Some students have even begun saving up their own money to buy these books so that they can read them. It is so amazing to see my students so invested in their learning, but right now, we are so short on books! If we could just have a few more copies of each book, each student would have much more time to interact with the literature independently and take charge of their own learning.
