Our school is a diverse comprehensive middle school in San Francisco Unified. I am committed to providing space and time in class for my students to read on a daily basis and hopefully develop a love of reading. In order to find that love of reading, they must read books that have characters and situations that interest them. The current books of choice in class lean heavily toward white, male, protagonist. I want my students to find mirrors in their books of choice-books that show them how a character like them faced a real life challenge. Reading more diverse books will ultimately improve the personal and academic lives of my students.
