Students love science! Unfortunately, when there are no materials or time is short this tends to be what gets cut. Then by the time they get to 4th and 5th grade, students sometimes don't have all the background knowledge they should. Racing and building your own solar car gives students an opportunity to become an engineer while applying and learning so many standards. They will remember the experience and content much better, than reading a textbook. Students will work in pairs to see how they can best build their own solar car. They will have to make changes to see how they can make it go faster.
