As a first-year teacher, it has been easy to build my base of a classroom library, through yard sales and thrift stores. However, it is noticeably lacking in multicultural texts that can connect to my students personally. What is multicultural literature? The Cooperative Children’s Book Center of Univerisity of Wisconsin – Madison has defined it as “books by and about people of color and First Nation people.” (CCBC Website). I would love to provide my students with high-quality literature that they all can identify with. Not only will these books help my students connect to their own lives, but it will also help them understand the perspectives of their classmates. I have also chosen several biographies that will inspire my students to pursue their dreams, no matter what their background is. In the past, there has been a minority of multicultural books created for primary students. While the publication of such literature it is growing, the affordability of the literature is not. I have discovered many high-quality, multicultural texts I would like to add to my classroom; however, multicultural literature is often printed in low quantities and by smaller publishers, increasing the prices and lowering the quantity available. This project will help support my efforts to develop a well-rounded classroom library.
