My students need alternative seating such as stools, floor cushions, bean bag chairs, stability balls and fidget bands. Giving the students a choice of work spaces in the classroom gives them ownership over their learning. It also makes them responsible for the choices they make in the classroom and helps them learn to problem solve. My students will have the opportunity to try out several different seating types to determine which one works the best for them. If they are comfortable, they feel safe. If they feel safe, they will be able to stay focused and engaged in my room. I believe in keeping the focus on what's really important: the students. If student motivation and higher engagement is truly the desired end game, then I as teacher need to adapt right along with my students. I want my classroom to be conducive to open collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. Some benefits of alternative seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. I am excited to see what alternative seating does for my students. I have requested 5 stools that I will use at a table I currently have in my room. I will use the floor pillows at a table that has been lowered to allow students to sit on the cushions on the floor. The bean bags will be used during independent reading time and small group collaboration. The stability balls will be used in the place of traditional chairs at student desks. The fidget bands will be available for any student who wants them.
