Having students create their own vision of a scientific phenomenon in Physics and Chemistry is an important part in having them construct their own knowledge rather than just digesting pictures in a textbook or on a slide. My students will use these large dry erase boards to map out how a Physics law is working in the real world or how the small unseen world of chemistry is working on a more visual level. Modeling in science is the most effective way to understand complicated scientific content. By offering each of my 8 groups their own large board, markers, and eraser they will all have the opportunity to brainstorm together on a large surface, then display it for a gallery walk as the other groups offer constructive feedback to what they got right and what may have been left out.
