The storage cart will be used for storing differentiated materials for reading our centers. Reading centers are crucial for our students, because they help the teachers deliver reading instruction that is "just right" for them--not to easy, and not too difficult. We use a variety of manipulatives that are tailored to each groups individual needs, and sometimes organizing these materials can be difficult. This cart would allow me to organize my materials into 5 different levels, and would save time and energy during class that might otherwise be spent tracking down my supplies. The "wiggle seats" requested will help 2nd graders sit for longer periods of time while listening to instruction or working quietly at their seats. Here is a quote from a NEA article that supports the idea of movement in the classroom: "A 2008 study found that children actually need to move to focus during a complicated mental task. The children in the study—especially those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)—fidgeted more when a task required them to store and process information rather than just hold it. This is why students are often restless while doing math or reading, but not while watching a movie, explained Dr. Mark Rapport, the supervisor of the study and professor of psychology at the University of Central Florida in Orlando." *Source: http://www.nea.org/tools/47003.htm Lastly, the dry erase markers are something our class will use daily during quick, formative assessments for both language arts and math. These assessments help me as a teacher to easily adjust my instruction to best meet the student's needs.
