Flexible seating is researched to show improvement with student focus and help academic achievement. Students in our public school system range in a variety of academic, behavioral, and family backgrounds. Our students come to us from a majority of low income families and struggle in the classroom. It is time for me to make a difference in my classroom to help student love to learn. Math is a difficult academic area and students come to class not ready to learn due to focus. Flexible seating allows students for find what works for them so they are comfortable and focused during lessons. They get to make a choice and own their space. Seating will be arranged so that we can run math groups and stations. Changing the traditional classroom set up and removing desks from the classroom allows for space and variety. I am requesting for Wobble Chairs, fidget bands, stools, and wobble cushions just to name a few. We as teachers are asking students to sit for hours daily and then wonder by the end of the day why our last period class has no attention span or focus to learn. Using flexible seating will allowing students to move freely in a space that capitalizes on cooperative learning and allow for easier teacher directed instruction as students will be better focused.
