In Massachusetts, middle school science classes integrate Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Sciences, and Engineering. My students love learning each of these topics through projects. Right now our Engineering curriculum includes a series of projects in which students use basic materials (straws, popsicle sticks, rubber bands) to engineer solutions. I want to supplement these projects with more sophisticated technology so that students get a robust experience with engineering technologies. Using a 3D printer, my students will gain experience with basic CAD and be able to see more complex designs through to completion. Our uses of this printer will include: designing parts for miniature vehicles to understand transportation subsystems, engineering solutions for combating sea-level rise in Boston, and learning about structural engineering through bridge design.
