Each of my students has an unique set of special needs and they are motivated by different items. Some of my students are willing to work for edibles, while others enjoy toys, some like dolls and dress up, and others could consume technology all day. It is imperative that I have all of these desired items easily accessible for staff members during the school day to immediately reinforce positive behavior. Resources and funding is very limited at the school I work at, with 100% of the students receiving free breakfast and lunch at school. This year I have a new student who has mild to severe cognitive and physical disabilities. This student this a space in which they can safely play and work on communicating with using picture symbols. I plan on blocking a space in my classroom with these bookshelves, to protect the student from my active students while at the same time using the bookshelves to hold some of the objects that are motivating for the student to independently communicate what they want.
