Our class read the book "Fish in a Tree" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, and fell in love with the main character, Ally Nickerson, a young girl, with dyslexia. Ally is inspired by her teacher Mr. Daniels, who teachers her how to play chess. Ally is able to rework her brain, and see a clearer picture of herself and the world, through the moves she learns on the chess board. Our class fell in love with the chess analogies that the author makes, in reference to the pieces on the board, and to how we navigate through life. I want to also inspire my students to be creative, to use both sides of their brain, to build their memory, spatial, problem solving, and concentration skills, and how they can master a game, that can help them later in life!
