Science education provides problem solving and analysis skills that transfer to any area my students choose to study or work in down the road. Getting adolescents engaged and excited about science can be a challenge, though. It's a hard subject and can be intimidating to them. One of the best ways to make teens love biology is to connect all the concepts I teach to what matters most in their world - THEM! Anatomy does just that. Every topic we cover, from biochemistry to DNA to ecology, can be related to the study of human body systems. I integrate this information throughout the year and the best culminating activity I've found to really drive it all home is a dissection lab. It's amazing to see how excited and focused they are. When we get ready to review for our final exam I hear them relating the material to the anatomy lessons. They remember it because it's real to them.
