Books should be both windows and mirrors. When I read aloud to my students, they should gain new perspectives that give them a window of understanding of other cultures, beliefs, and ideas. Students should also see books as mirrors so that when they read, they see themselves, their families, and their world represented and embraced. As I've been doing the work of implementing anti-racism practices in my classroom, I strongly believe that having diverse literature available at my students' fingertips is one way I can work to create the most inclusive and dynamic school experience possible for my students. Reading these diverse books in the classroom will build background knowledge, help children make connections, and allow my students to embrace their culture and identity while learning about the world around them.
