My students are very diverse in their English development. They range from being newly arrived to the United States with limited English to students who are nearly fluent in English. To meet the needs of all my students, I require a variety of tools to teach them. My focus for my newcomers to the United States is helping them learn the English alphabet and letter sounds. Many languages that my students speak are ones that use a different alphabet from us. Due to this pivotal difference, learning the alphabet and letter sounds is a huge undertaking for my students. To help students learn the alphabet in a fun, interactive way, I have included an Alphabet Theme Book Library set to read to my students. This will allow me to have an ongoing routine of reading books aloud to my students. For my advanced English Language Learners, I am focusing on writing skills, because writing skills tend to be the most under-developed skills in English literacy. Reading is a passive input of information, whereas writing is an active output that usually requires higher level cognitive processes. To challenge my students, I have asked for composition notebooks for my students to keep as journals. I have also included a Correct the Sentence! Daily Journal, which will give students practice with editing and revising their work, which is a crucial skill for writing. Additionally, for my more advanced learners, I have included a Match and Sort Language Set for grades 4-5. I teach 2nd grade, but my advanced learners found little challenge with the 2-3 grade Match and Sort, so I need the next level to provide adequate challenge for these students.
