Research shows that improving children's auditory awareness of sounds is an integral part of speech sound remediation. The ear provides important feedback to hear the characteristics of a sound, discriminate between sounds, and self-monitor sound productions during the learning process. By providing auditory input through a low-level amplification device, students will be able to develop "auditory images" to help monitor correct and incorrect speech sound productions. Giving my students the opportunity to use a personal amplification device will not only grab their auditory attention, it will also increase motivation to practice speech skills during therapy sessions. Kids love their electronics! At the beginning and end of each therapy session, the amplification device will be used by the speech-language pathologist to provide "focused auditory input" of the student's targeted sounds. During production-practice tasks, the personal amplifiers may then be used by the student when needing that low-level amplification of sounds to self-monitor and make adjustments for the most precise productions. As my students learn targeted speech patterns through listening, they will become more aware of phonemes, syllables, and words; this will, in turn, also support phonological awareness skills needed for literacy success. The goal of this project is to maximize progress during speech therapy sessions in order for students to become successful communicators in the classroom!
