In my classroom, I frequently challenge my Biology and Physics students to complete their own research projects and design their own lab activities. One of the challenges to this, is that students cannot easily work in groups with traditional fixed desks. Students need a physical space that allows them to work collaboratively, to spread out their materials, and to plan their inquiry-based labs. This project will help me create spaces for flexible grouping that will allow students to creatively brainstorm and work together on research and data analysis. Using the carpet, lounge pillows, plush chairs, and yoga mats, I will be able to create a variety of spaces for student collaboration. Using these items will allow my students to move more freely within the classroom and to flex their "mental muscles" in a comfortable, home-like environment.
