I am requesting approximately 40 picture books to read with my students and add to our classroom library. Many 5th graders may think they have moved on from picture books and are now "too old." This is absolutely not the case! In addition to our regular novel read alouds, mini-lessons, and other literacy experiences, I plan to read at least one picture book per day with my students. I want my students to enjoy stories and remember how to sit back and be read to for the pure joy of hearing and sharing stories. My goal is to provide a culture of safety and acceptance by reading books in which students' see themselves, as well as encourage their sense of compassion for others' thoughts and feelings by reading them a diverse multitude of texts. In addition to all this, we will have common texts to go back to all year as we anchor new learning. Donations to this project will allow students to enjoy, form an opinion about, appreciate, and respond critically to a wide variety of books.
