The inspiration for this project came from the children's book, "Only One You." The story is about a little fish who is about to go explore the ocean on his own. His parents share with him the wisdom they’ve learned throughout their lives and hope that it will help him throughout his journey. They remind him to “always be on the lookout for a new friend,” and to “find your own way, you don’t have to follow the crowd.” The story emphasizes that even though we are all individuals, together we have something to contribute to the world. Teaching students the values of caring about other people, as well as being true to themselves, is just as important as learning to read. Studies show that success in the classroom has been closely linked to emotional well-being, so values and social and emotional education is vital. "Garden Rocks" is a school-wide project. All staff and students will read "Only One You" and discuss the qualities of good character. Every page of the book depicts a group of "rock" fish that are all unique from one another. Every student and staff member will then paint an individual "rock" fish. The supplies we will need include acrylic paints and paint pens to create our fish on the rocks. Once finished, we will use acrylic gloss spray to seal their designs and protect them from Florida's harsh UV rays and rain. All the rocks will be placed outside in a rock garden. The rock garden will feature a pathway, so everyone can enjoy this amazing project. Visitors to the rock garden will encounter a sign reminding them that, “There’s only one you in this great big world. Make it a better place.”
