I base what I do in my classroom on research and best practices for kids. My most recent research efforts have led me to discover that there are numerous benefits of flexible seating. Some of those benefits include burning more calories, using up excess energy, creating better oxygen flow to the brain, improved metabolism, increased motivation, engagement, and productivity and improved core strength and overall posture. Flexible seating options allow students opportunities for movement and studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior. The furniture and materials that I am requesting for my project will allow me to offer flexible seating options to my students. My students will be able to select seating and a space in the classroom where they are most comfortable and productive. This flexibility will include being able to move again if their current location isn’t working for them. Flexible seating options will include: Sitting on exercise balls or wobble stools at tables or desks. Sitting or kneeling on yoga mats on the floor with clipboards or lap desks. Working at tables or traditional desks and chairs. Standing at bookshelves or tall tables/desks. Sitting or kneeling on pillows at low tables. Sitting on soft seating like beanbag chairs or carpet squares with clipboards or lap desks.
