Fifth grade boys need to find engaging, interesting text in order to become lifelong readers. As a fifth grade teacher in an inner city science magnet school, I find that girls easily find books that engage them, while boys have more difficulty. Many times they prefer sports and video games, mostly because they have not found books that they like.
