A lifelong love of reading starts in a cozy, welcoming classroom reading corner. Reading in elementary school is a fundamental skill that defines the academic success of a child in middle school. Once students hit 4th grade they switch from learning to read to reading to learn.
My job as a SPED teacher is to provide a literacy-rich environment that allows students with disabilities to have access to supplementary instruction and experiences that they might have missed in their previous years.
My 4th/5th grade special day classroom needs these materials to create a reading corner that can facilitate positive language and literacy opportunities. The area rug will give students a space big enough to sit down and enjoy books, the easel and poster paper will help me and my paraprofessional differentiate small group lessons on the rug. The printer and ink will help me print quick, leveled books to put in the classroom mailbox center of our reading corner. The balance ball, wiggle seats and sensory toys will fulfill sensory and movement needs during lessons.
My students are at all different levels and abilities and creating this reading corner allows me to differentiate and meet their needs. Given the support of these materials, I hope to create this reading nook so that students will be better prepared to work on their literacy skills and become lifelong readers!
