As I read this book this summer, I could picture my students asking to keep reading one more chapter and eagerly sharing their own knowledge of family members fleeing former homes for a hopeful future in the United States. Deep, syncretic learning and empathy-building is made possible with real engagement, and I predict my students will become deeply engaged with the lives of these characters. During and after reading, my students will craft research projects and will evaluate what kinds of aid is most helpful to people who are refugees. Students will also develop their reading comprehension and writing skills as a part of this unit.
