In this day in age, nine and ten year olds seem to be highly interested in video games and TV shows. However, with the right text in their hands, the world can come to life around them. I have used Storyworks in the past with amazing results! Students are actively engaged when reading and doing the activities in Storyworks magazines. Storyworks provides every genre and is standars driven. It also includes writing and grammar practice with topics that are interesting and current. With Storyworks my students have explored countries in civil war, beautifully written Greek mythology, how dogs became pets, a young girl's tale of immigration, and so much more. They have considered their opinions on hot topics such as fidget spinners and serving chocolate milk in schools. The texts in these magazines give students a voice about topics they may not have otherwise had access to, in a way that still helps me do my job of providing them rigorous standard driven education.
