My students WANT to be better readers, the problem is, they don't know how. Please don't get me wrong -- they can all read. The books they choose to read for pleasure tend to be pre-teen fluff. I teach in a high-need neighborhood and many of my students are not encouraged to read at home or are not engaged in any sort of family-reading routine. They are now in Middle School and have a hard time understanding how to choose books that will challenge them appropriately.
