I want to introduce students two a set of classroom mice to help encourage responsibility, care and empathy. Students in this grade level need opportunities to observe intelligent animals in a way that best fits in with the scope and sequence of upper grade life science study. Further, students will be able to take turns being responsible for another living creature and develop Nurturing skills that tie in with our weekly lessons on empathy and bullying prevention. Studies have shown that children who show compassion towards animals are more likely to carry those feelings and skills over in to their typical social lives. In order to care for our furry friends, we will need lots of nutritious food (which will also help students understand the animal food webs involved) like Kaytee Fiesta Mouse and Rat Food, 4.5-lb bag, 8 In 1 Pet Products Cheesie Chews, an OVO water bottle, Kaytee Fiesta Blueberry Flavor Yogurt Dipped Treats for Hamster, Rice Pops and Timothy Apple Treats - as well as the Ergonomic food dish. Our furry friends will also need a sustainable and easily observed home which is why we are asking specifically for the Habitrail Cristal Hamster Habitat, Habitrail Ovo Transport Unit, Playground and Clear Igloo. We have selected the two different brands of bedding as they are hypo-allergenic AND have the added bonus of a calming lavender essential oil base.
