As the school year approaches, my goal is to transform our room into an environment more like a modern-style library or bookstore, rather than the standard stuffy classroom. When the students enter, I want them to feel at ease rather than stressed out and intimidated. The tables will be set up at various heights and surrounded with a variety of seating options, such as the meditation pillows, the colorful stools, and the wobble cushions. (These will be an option in addition to our standard classroom chairs.) Having a variety of adjustable tables rather than desks allows the classroom to be more effective for flexible seating, as well as collaborative group work and using manipulatives. The rug will be placed in our classroom library, surrounded by books with an assortment of seating choices. When everything is in place, it will be an environment that promotes comfort, collaboration, self-motivation, and learning. Flexible seating will allow the students to choose where and how they learn best. Some students do their best work when sitting independently at a desk, but many students do not. Consider my students who have ADD/ADHD or autism; many of them struggle to stay seated and actually do their best work when rocking, kneeling, or standing. The wobble cushions can be used for kneeling or sitting, while also providing sensory input (helping students to focus), which is highly beneficial for my students who are on the spectrum. With my proposed classroom setup, I believe that with your help, I will be able to accommodate most, if not all of my students. We will be able to provide a classroom that they will want to come to each day and find the peace, comfort, and accommodations they need to succeed.
