Books have the power to broaden students' knowledge about the world. They can take students back in time to moments with famous Americans or dinosaurs. They can make students laugh out loud or take them to explore places they have never been to around the world. Books can also teach students how to deal with their emotions by connecting them with characters going through similar issues as them. More than that though, research has proven time and time again that the time spent reading feeds more more reading, and reading great books inspires great writing. In his research of independent reading for over 40 years, Stephen Krashen reveals that no single literacy activity has a more positive effect on students’ comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, spelling, writing ability, and overall academic achievement than free voluntary reading. As a new teacher to second grade, I am looking to build a great classroom library for my students this upcoming school year. The books in our classroom library, such as My Friend is Sad, Babymouse, and I Broke My Trunk, will get the kids excited about reading and help to increase their literacy skills. Not only that, but the books will most certainly enhance our overall classroom environment! By donating to our project, you will not only help to provide books for our classroom library, but you will also inspire a love of independent reading and life-long learning. The joys and skills of reading are something the students will carry with them for a lifetime!
