We are working with a new curriculum and finding novels to align. We are a Title 1 school where reading levels are low, and a lack of interest in reading is high. Middle Schoolers need to be able to see themselves in the characters they read, and this is possible with The Young Landlords, by Walter Dean Myers. I want to give them the opportunity to read stories that they can connect to and remember! My students will be using Wednesdays this year to do novel studies and create projects that make connections between what they read and their own lives, and this is the book to start with!
