These large, pull down maps will allow my students to explore where they are in Michigan and how that relates to other parts of the world. The second Next Generation Science Standards state that second graders will be introduced to maps which show landforms, oceans and other water bodies. My second graders will explore the history of planet Earth with the understanding that some events happen very quickly while others occur over a long period of time. Wind and water can change the shape of the land. They will use these maps as models of the world and will be able to find rivers and streams, oceans and water, forests, mountains, tropical rainforests and deserts. They will also be able to better understand the habitats of animals as they learn more about the landforms. These maps will also be used in Reading. Children need to understand where the setting is in a story and where the characters live, especially if it is different than their own home. Informational text often states locations. Naming the setting is important but understanding the setting will be made clearer by studying the map, talking about the landforms and location in relationship to Michigan followed by reading the text. By utilizing these maps the students will have a greater understanding and therefore will comprehend the text at a deeper level. By having these maps my students will have hands on materials that will benefit their reading, science and social studies understandings.
