Story time is almost every child's favorite time of day (next to recess of course). Children get to travel to new worlds and be new people while enjoying stories. This time really helps children fall in love with books and reading. Listening to stories aloud is also helpful to reading development in so many ways. At this stage of development, it is critical that my first graders are exposed to what good reading sounds like, so they can mimic that skill to improve their reading. Listening to a story read aloud while eyes are on the text also helps students store new words in their word bank. I think it is important that my children have a listening center to listen to stories that they are interested in reading. Having this center in my classroom will help enhance their love of learning, in turn, create strong life long readers!
