At my school, we use Lucy Calkin's Reading Workshop to structure our literacy time. Much of the belief behind the Reading Workshop is centered around the idea that kids become better readers when they are given lots of time to read. The reading block begins with a Minilesson, followed by students grabbing their own personal reading bins that are full of appropriate leveled books for each student. The book bins are essential for a successful literacy block so that each student is able to have access to his or her own collection of books. The book shelf is something I want to use to display certain, particular books to the class. For instance, at the beginning of the year, I would display various Back to School themed books. As the seasons change, I would display Fall related books and later Winter/Spring/Summer books. I think the book shelf would be a fun way for students to be exposed to books that are relevant to them given the time of year. I also would display books that we read aloud together on this book shelf.
