Oscar Wilde's quote, "It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it," really hits what I would like to accomplish. Providing children with many different books and giving them choice, empowers them to be strong thinkers and confident human beings. Our students struggle with reading a great deal mostly in part to not reading enough. If we provide strong literature, rich with vocabulary and meaning, we will create an environment for children to thrive in reading. The other piece is that it shows children that they have a choice when they read. It becomes about finding what speaks to them as readers and embracing it. They may even find a new friend that has the same appetite for reading as they do. –
