Visual supports are used in a variety of ways in the preschool environment. Not only is this the only way some students can communicate their wants and needs, but allows verbal students to work independently to complete tasks by following visual schedules and rules with words and simple pictures. Visuals also include not only pictures, but words to encourage early literacy skills and increasing the use of classroom vocabulary. Visual supports allow all children to develop ways to be independent and encourage them to communicate within classroom activities. Children as young as 2.9 can complete a morning routine with the help of a simple visual cue card to remind them what's next. However, at this age, a simple piece of paper doesn't always hold up to the always moving hands and feet of a preschooler! By laminating visual supports, with the lamination pouches in the classroom, they become much more hands on and child-friendly, as well as reusable!
