During my first few years of teaching, I expected my students to come in immediately at 8:00am, sit in their seats, and get everything done in that seat until it is time for lunch. This means that students would have very minimal movement for 3.5 hours. (We can't have students moving around where they want and not sitting in their desks all day... right??!!... Wrong!) As a result, they tend to get very antsy, tired, and not engaged in their studies. I have realized over the years that this style of classroom management is not conducive to learning. With so many different learning styles in one classroom, it is imperative to allow students to be able to focus in a way that helps them learn. I have had students that are not engaged or motivated to complete a single sheet of work at their desk, but the minute they are given the option to lay down on the carpet with their work, they complete their work with success. It is time to start catering to individual needs in the classroom. There has been tons of research on flexible seating, which proves that it is absolutely conducive to student's learning styles. According to an article by Kayla Dezler from edutopia.org , "some of the immediate benefits (PDF) of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increased motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It's no surprise that physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior." My students would absolutely benefit from flexible seating so that they can use up excess energy while learning, have more freedom in the classroom, and be motivated to be engaged in their studies.
