Being in a low-income school, my students are limited to the types of learning materials they are exposed to. Having a variety of math manipulatives and materials will allow my students to explore mathematics in a new, engaging, and meaningful way. "The effective use of manipulatives can help students connect ideas and integrate their knowledge so that they gain a deep understanding of mathematical concepts." Using dominoes, a variety style of dice, large playing cards, and legos will engage students in a variety of mathematical contexts. Students can practice multiplication facts with dominoes, explore area and perimeter with legos, and create new understandings of place value. While using the math workshop style in my classroom I want my students to feel comfortable and ready to learn wherever they are. Some students may like to sit at their desk while they are learning while some may like sitting on the floor. The bouncy bands will help student who have trouble focusing or who like to move around. The cushions will allow students to sit comfortably during workshop time at a lower table or on the ground with their clipboard. Having a variety of learning environments can allow for students to choose where their learning can be more conducive. I want my students to feel at home when they walk into my room. They will feel like they are capable of EVERYTHING. Allowing them to explore multiple materials and learn in different styles will expand my classroom into more than just a classroom. They will be more than just students...they will be discoverers.
