Last year was my first year teaching. I tried applying everything that I learned in college. Some of the techniques worked and some did not. My biggest challenge was how to create a workspace that allows all of my students to work at their best ability. I learned that most of my students struggled to stay focused while sitting at their desks. I bought them all a clipboard and allowed them to work where they were the most comfortable. The dynamics of my classroom changed, especially for the ones that needed more help to stay focused! Students learn best when they are able to be active in the classroom. Physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. In fact, a paper by Matthew T. Mahar, et al (PDF) finds that: "Simple in-class activities can boost performance. Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially. I want to create a classroom that allows kids to be actively learning. By allowing places where they can move, bounce, kick, whatever is needed to ease their busy bodies and allow them to learn. I will be providing these places with the stability balls and discs so that they can move while sitting at their desks. Yoga mats where they can lay while working together. Bean bag and saucer chairs that will comfort students who may struggle. With all of these optuons plus more, I cannot wait to have all the options for my students to find their highest learning potential.
