2nd grade is that magical time where students are just beginning to dive into chapter books and read with more confidence and independence! Regardless of where a student comes from, books are able to transport them anywhere in the world. Last year, I taught below grade-level 3rd graders. A lot of them were reluctant to read. I assumed this was because they struggled so much. However, as I went through my classroom library I realized that I probably didn't have many books at their level, or that would hold their interest. This year, as I move to 2nd grade, I truly hope to have books in our classroom library that are both of interest to my students as well as on their level. For students that might not have any books at home, I hope to offer a selection that fosters a love for reading for the rest of their lives.
