Many students come into my 5th grade class reading at a 4th grade level or below. When they head to the classroom library full of chapter books, they are understandably overwhelmed. Other students genuinely believe that they do not like to read and will never find a book they enjoy. Enter the graphic novel - a "chapter book" set up like a comic. These books are written with the interests of upper elementary and middle school age readers in mind, but with enough pictures to keep struggling readers engaged and comprehending the text. Not only are the novels beautiful works of art, but they also give reluctant readers a chance to realize that reading is FUN! I have a few graphic novels in my library now, and my students love them so much that I can never keep them on the shelf! This year, I am looking to expand our collection. I chose a few high interest series for both boys and girls to include in this project, as well as several novels that are not part of a series. Every student should be able to find something he/she will enjoy! If these books can help even one student develop a love of reading, it will be money will spent.
