As a veteran teacher, I have observed the change in student learning over the last five years. As our curriculum has become more difficult and challenging, students have begun to struggle staying focused and working efficiently and smartly in the class. I have come to realize that the chairs they have to sit in all day are terribly uncomfortable and that many of them need to move or fidget as they work. Having students choose the right way to learn empowers their choice-making, teaches self-advocacy, and highlights a self-awareness that results in more confident learners. By offering a variety of seating and standing options, I hope to access the avenue of learning that works best for each student. i am looking to purchase a couple of wobble stools (which allow students to sit and "wobble" while seated), five balance balls to build core strength and allow bouncing, and finally six cushions to place on existing seats so that students can fidget in their existing seats. Each of these purchases will give my students choices in seating and allow them to move in a way that keeps them focused. I have already noticed a huge change in some of my students by offering a standing table. I can't wait to see the results of offering seating that allows them to move a bit while seated!
