My fourth grade students deserve to learn in an environment where they feel comfortable and focused. It is difficult for students to remain engaged when they have to sit in a desk all day long. With flexible seating like wobble chairs, stability balls, lap desks, and carpet squares, students will have a variety of seating options and spaces available for them to work at. Unlike traditional desks, flexible seating will allow for students to make choices regarding their learning environment and judge where in the classroom they are able to be most successful. Research shows that students are more motivated to learn when they are allowed to make choices regarding their learning. My ultimate goal is to create a classroom environment where all students can thrive. In our classroom, most lessons are differentiated based on students’ individual needs. Students frequently move around the room as they work with partners and do group work. Having desks taking up most of the space in the room is not conducive to our flexible environment. Flexible seating will create a student-centered space that allows for students to more easily concentrate, collaborate, and remain engaged throughout the school day.
