My school year always begins with activities that help each student and I learn more about each other. It is also a time to set some expectations for the year. For the past 5 years, the basic 2 rules in my classroom are: Work Hard, Be Nice. I plan to implement the book, Wonder into my beginning of year curriculum to initiate discussions about respect--for oneself and others. This book is about a boy with facial deformities who begins public school for the first time in fifth grade. It is written in first-person through the eyes of the main character-Auggie, his family, and his friends. It is a dramatic book about bullying, friendship, and trust. It will help illustrate what it means to be empethtic and compassionate. There are many activities to relate to the story including, writing/journaling, reading, discussion, and the arts. There's also a movie based on the book coming out in November 2017 that I hope to bring my students to see.
